And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom
We, the Bookfayries Siri and Selma, have always been fascinated by Anaïs Nin (1903-1977). She is an author known for her diaries. She wrote 35000 pages of diary from her age of 11 onwards, and her erotic stories are famous too. She was a close friend to Henry Miller, whom she helped to publish „The Tropic of Cancer“. Miller helped her in return to a commission to write pornographic stories for a dollar per page for a collector. These stories became years later Nin`s highly successful short story collection „The Delta of Venus“ which was filmed as well. To these short stories applies what our Master already wrote in his blog short history of the pornographic novel: The best pornographic literature is written by women.
Throw your dreams into a space like a kite and you do not know what it will bring back, a new life, a new friend, a new love
Reading D.H. Lawrence was essential for Anaïs Nin. She was fascinated by Lawrence’s strong opinion that it is hypocritical to deny one`s desires. That was Henry Miller`s idea as well. He and Lou Andreas-Salomé, who Nin adored, didn`t obviously deny her desires.
Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one`s courage
Anaïs Nin was an author as well as a trained psychoanalyst (trained by Otto Rank) which was particularly concerned with incest. We took the following quote from her scandalous book „House of Incest“ (1936) – a small book we really liked. Anaïs Nin lived three days and nights with her father near Nimes. Literary scholars and Bookfayries like us wonder if it actually came to an incest or whether it is a literary fiction. Anaïs Nin pretended to have seduced her father.
„I remember my first birth in water. All round me a sulphurous transparency and my bones move as if made of rubber
I sway and float, stand on boneless toes listening for distant sounds, sounds beyond the reach of human ears, see things beyond the reach of human eyes. Born full of memories of the bells of Atlantide.
Always listening for lost sounds and searching for lost colors, standing forever on the threshold like one troubled with memories, and walking with a swimming stride.
I cut the air with wideslicing fins, and swim through wall-less rooms.“
From Anaïs Nin, House of Incest
Solche Sätze wie „I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naive or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman“ ließen A. Nin zu einer der beliebtesten Autorinnen für Frauen auf ihren Selbstfindungsweg werden.
Such sentences like „I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naive or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman“ let A. Nin become one of the most popular authors read by women trying to free themselves.
Did you know that a crater on Venus is named Nin after Anais Nin?
Bis nächste Woche
