The Berlin artist Susanne Haun is kindly presenting her book collection today. She runs a blog worthwhile visiting for everybody interested in arts (every article with an English summary). I reckon her blog as special as you find discussions there about art and not only the contentless “wow!”, “great!” and “beautiful!”
Thank you, dear Susanne, for presenting your book collection. We wish all our readers fun reading it

I have got five meters Ikea Ivar shelves. I like the shelves because I have the possibility to set the book boards individually. So I haven’t loose space. I haven’t space for more shelves in my flat. The purchase of a new book refers to the separation from an old one. So in this 5 meter shelf is the quintessence of my books.

With the time I find it increasingly difficult to sort out books. My darlings left me roughly in the order: children’s books, science fiction, older picture books, books for analog photography, computer programming, novelette and thrillers. On the photos of my shelves you can see that I’ve just brought back a bag full of books to the library, to make room for my Christmas gifts.
Four years ago, on my last move in a new flat, I was ill and so were my books packed under my instructions (I had to separate from six meters shelfspace), but my brother unpacked and placed the books on the shelves in my new flat. From the chaos he made, my order of books has never recovered.
Mainly I own art books and they are not sorted on the shelves. I find them again, because I know where they are, because I work with them frequently. It would make sense to sort them by epoch or by artist monographs, exhibition catalogs and anthologies. Maybe I’ll take this post as an opportunity to finally sort my books in the shelves.
One of you would surely write in the comments that I could remove the images that you see in the photos. But my private art collection of my colleagues is just as important as my books. I change the paintings regularly against other from the collecting folder. I put my books and audiobooks in two rows. I let ten cm free space of books in the front row so I can see the second row. This gap I can move back and forth and have slightly a different section of the second row of books.

For the university, I bought a tablet. I have many pdf files with the excerpts of books that I receive in the seminars and I don’t want to print them and accumulate endless rows of ugly A4 document folders. I don’t want to use the place for them. With Adobe Reader I can read the pdf files very well. Mark and write notes are easily setting with my finger. A big bonus of the tablet is the availability of my blog if I have an Internet access.

Four years ago, there was the biggest change in my library, I began to buy audiobooks. I use iTunes to manage and an external hard drive to save them. I listen to them on an iPod with headphones, when I hear an interesting or exciting book I just put the headphones away until the book is told. Mostly I buy the unabridged audio books online.

I bought some ebooks for my Tablet`s Kindle software, but I don’t like this type of reading. I miss to browse through pages in the books, even with the audio books I can quickly jump between chapters.
If I ask myself what book I have been most impressed by, or which book is my favorite, I would prefer to say: „The current one“ – so every week a new book.
Last week I read about Herwarth Röttgen „Caravaggio, Amor Vincit Omnia „. The book has led me to many other questions, which I made with the help of other books such as „Art Baroque epochs,“ or seeking to answer „Caravaggio and the limits of represented: ambiguity, irony and performativity in painting in 1600.“ The book „baroque“ I bought, „performativity“ I borrowed of the State Library. I like the search strings that can cause a single image.

In December I heard the autobiography of Schlingensie spoken by himself and by Martin Wuttke. A debate of cancer, the art and life itself. This audio book has left a deep impression on me.

To relax I like listening crime stories, tales and Latin American books. I like the Latin American story tellers because they write a flowery style. They account for the fact that someone going three steps up a road a whole novel.
Whether I hear thrillers, read or watch a movie, I like the fun to guess the criminals as early as possible. To Arne Dahl’s thrillers I like the political background to the events he spins. My interested in Jeffery Deaver is the forensics. Arnaldur Indriðason is the soft fine, which I think is worth hearing. At the photo you can see a selection of audio books that I have to stand not only in my iTunes library. They although stand real in my shelf.

It is very difficult to recommend a book for the first encounter with art. It is a question how deep the interested human being would like to go into art. „Mit Feder, Stift und Pinsel“ gives a good overview of drawing, but it is from 1985 and after this time the development of drawing was great. Entertaining and exciting look you will find to the book „Traum-Karriere Künstler“. A classic and for all who are interested in iconography a MUST is the book „Meaning in the visual art“ by Panofsky. He wrote it at first in English.

I bought one of my favorite new books at the documenta 13. In front of the Fridericianum (the first public museum in general) the bookseller Walther König was having a bookshop in several containers . He had set the goal presenting at least one book from every artist at the documenta in the container shop. I bought a book about the Spiral Jetty, a kind of landart by Robert Smithson.
Siral Jetty – a book fascinating me
When I read I built images in my mind that I carry out in ink drawings. These ink drawings I collect sometimes to unique artist books. It is too much to report here about it.
I conclude my report with a quote by Sándor Márai that amused me:
„I live between heaven and earth, have something immortal and divine in me to care but also I pierce in the nose, if I’m alone in a room, […]“
I like the joke in Sándor Marais books, especially in „A Dog With Character.“

For the writing of this article I am crawled „deep in my bookshelves“ and discovered books, which I haven’t thought about a long time.
It gave me pleasure to write the article, I would like to thank Klausbernd, who published the report in his blog.
